El descopera uluit ca misiunea primordiala a presei, aceea de a informa publicul in mod obiectiv, este practic imposibil de pus in practica din pricina mai multor obstacole: lupta de interese, competitia intre ziare si, mai ales, goana nemiloasa dupa \u0084scoop\u0093, adica dupa \u0084bombe\u0093 jurnalistice. Din pricina unei neintelegeri, un ziarist cam prostut, William Boot, este angajat de patronul de la Daily Beast ca sa relateze de la fata locului razboiul civil dintr-o <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = \"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags\" \/><st1:place w:st=\"on\">tara<\/st1:place> imaginara a Africii. Ajuns aici, nu gaseste nici un razboi, ci o uriasa harababura politico-financiara. De formatie matematician si fizician, doctor in fizica teoretica al Universitatii din <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:State w:st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:State><\/st1:place>, el a intrat in arena fictiunii la varsta de 40 de ani. Primul si cel mai important, probabil, roman al sau (cel publicat recent in romaneste de editura Lucman) se numeste \u0084The Web Between the Worlds\u0093 si a aparut simultan cu \u0084Fantanile paradisului\u0093 al lui Arthur C. Clarke. Nesansa a facut ca amandoua volumele sa trateze acelasi subiect &#8211; construirea unui lift spatial, care sa faca legatura intre spatiul ceresc si Pamant.
