Jeffrey Archer, autor englez nascut in 1940, a ajuns sa-si statorniceasca faima de maestru al best-seller-urilor, indiferent de subiect. Absolvent de Oxford, a fost ales deputat la varsta de 29 de ani (!), devenind cel mai tanar membru al Camerei Comunelor. In 1985 a ajuns vicepresedinte (Deputy Chairman) al Partidului Conservator, iar in 1992 a fost innobilat si i s-au deschis astfel usile Camerei Lorzilor.<\/SPAN><\/P>

Cariera nu i-a fost insa scutita de accidente. In urma unui scandal financiar, a fost temporar silit sa paraseasca politica si sa se apuce de scris. A cunoscut un succes international aproape instantaneu, reluandu-si apoi cariera de politician din punctul in care o abandonase. Primul sau roman, cel pe care vi-l prezentam, tiparit in 1976 si inspirat de escrocheria careia i-a cazut victima,  descrie aventura a patru pagubiti (un medic, un negustor, un profesor si mostenitorul unui conte) hotarati sa-si recupereze banii de la Harvey Metcalfe, \u0084rege\u0093 al unor uriase afaceri tenebroase, cel care-i pacalise. <\/SPAN><\/P>
