Grecii antici mestecau mastic &#8211; un fel de guma de mestecat facuta din rasina arborelui de mastic, iar maiasii mestecau o substanta facuta din seva arborelui sapodilla. Indienii nord-americani mestecau rasina de molid si au transmis obiceiul si noilor-veniti, care mai obisnuiau sa mestece si ceara de albine. Totusi, guma, ca produs de consum, a cunoscut in 150 de ani o dezvoltare cum nu visau primii inventatori.<\/P>  <P align=justify><STRONG>1848:<\/STRONG> John B. Curtis a facut si vandut prima guma de mestecat, care se numea State of Maine Pure Spruce Gum (guma pura de molid din statul Maine).<\/P>  <P align=justify><STRONG>1850:<\/STRONG> Curtis a inceput sa vanda gume aromate facute din parafina, produse mai populare decat guma din rasina.<\/P>  <P align=justify><STRONG>1869:<\/STRONG> William Finley Semple a fost primul care a patentat o guma de mestecat.<\/P>  <P align=justify><STRONG>1971:<\/STRONG> Thomas Adams a patentat o masina pentru fabricarea gumei.<BR><\/P>  <P class=text align=justify><\/SPAN><STRONG>1880:<\/STRONG> John Colgan a descoperit cum sa faca pentru ca guma sa aiba gust bun o perioada mai lunga, in timpul mestecatului.<\/P>  <P class=text align=justify><STRONG>1888:<\/STRONG> Tutti-Frutti, un produs al companiei Adams, a fost prima guma vanduta la tonomat. Masinariile erau asezate in metroul din New York.<\/P>  <P class=text align=justify><STRONG>1899:<\/STRONG> Franklin V. Canning, un farmacist din New York, a inventat guma Dentyne.<\/P>  <P class=text align=justify><STRONG>1906:<\/STRONG> Frank Fleer a inventat prima guma de mestecat pentru baloane, numita Blibber-Blubber.<\/P>  <P class=text align=justify><STRONG>1914:<\/STRONG> A fost creata marca Wrigley Doublemint.
