Destul de logic, de altfel, nu? Biblioteca congresului, cea mai veche institu\u0163ie cultural\u0103 federal\u0103, dar \u015fi cea mai mare din lume, a fost \u00eenfiin\u0163at\u0103 cu 5.000 de dolari \u00een 1800, de c\u0103tre Quincy Adams, \u015fi a fost incendiat\u0103 de trupele britanice \u00een 1814, \u00eempreun\u0103 cu Capitoliul.<\/p>\n<p>\nFostul pre\u015fedinte Thomas Jefferson, retras atunci la Monticello, a oferit statului biblioteca sa: 6.487 volume str\u00e2nse \u00een peste 50 de ani, acoperind domenii diverse; c\u0103r\u0163ile pot fi v\u0103zute \u015fi ast\u0103zi acolo. At\u00e2t de mare era dispre\u0163ul fa\u0163\u0103 de ele, \u00eenc\u00e2t americanii \u00ee\u015fi hr\u0103neau porcii cu scoici \u015fi se sim\u0163eau jena\u0163i s\u0103 le ofere oaspe\u0163ilor homar. Gastronomia \u00eenflorea &#8211; condimentarea excesiv\u0103 din Evul Mediu f\u0103cuse loc unui stil nou de a g\u0103ti, \u00een care sosurile ofereau gusturi complexe \u015fi nu mai dominau preparatul. Regii g\u0103teau personal preparate speciale pentru apropia\u0163i, iar&nbsp; burghezia prelua re\u0163ete sofisticate de la curte \u015fi le adapta resurselor disponibile.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/storage0.dms.mpinteractiv.ro\/media\/401\/341\/5551\/15751524\/10\/the-library-of-congress-in-washington.jpg?height=465&#038;width=620\" style=\"width: 620px; height: 465px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\nLa unul din restauratorii epocii, Combeaux, l-a b\u0103gat Jefferson ucenic pe James Hemings, un sclav adus din \u0163ar\u0103 special pentru a \u00eenv\u0103\u0163a s\u0103 g\u0103teasc\u0103 fran\u0163uze\u015fte. \u00cen\u0163elegerea pe care st\u0103p\u00e2nul a f\u0103cut-o cu Hemings avea \u00een vedere eliberarea acestuia dup\u0103 ce \u00ee\u015fi va preg\u0103ti un succesor \u00een buc\u0103t\u0103ria de la Monticello.<\/p>\n<p>\nHemings, fiu al socrului lui Thomas Jefferson cu una din sclavele sale, s-a bucurat \u00een Fran\u0163a de un statut aparte; pe l\u00e2ng\u0103 instruc\u0163ia de prim\u0103 m\u00e2n\u0103 pe care o primea, avea \u015fi un statut de om liber, c\u0103ci Fran\u0163a aderase la principiul libert\u0103\u0163ii, astfel \u00eenc\u00e2t pe teritoriul s\u0103u to\u0163i oamenii erau liberi. Probabil acest aspect l-a f\u0103cut pe Jefferson, ambiguu \u00een privin\u0163a sclaviei, s\u0103 \u00eei ofere lui Hemings un tratament special, de\u015fi nici cu ceilal\u0163i servitori ai s\u0103i nu se purta r\u0103u.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00cen toate c\u0103l\u0103toriile \u015fi experien\u0163ele avute \u00een Fran\u0163a, Thomas Jefferson a c\u0103utat acele lucruri care puteau fi trimise sau replicate acas\u0103. Una dintre re\u0163ete este cea de crem\u0103 brulee sau crem\u0103 ars\u0103, varianta francez\u0103 a cremei noastre de zah\u0103r ars.
